Summer is here – time to brighten your career!

May 21, 2018 | Career Advice

Summer is a time of endings and beginnings. The kids are dropping their pencils and their books and diving into their summer vacations. The sun is shining, the days are longer and even if you neglected the traditional “Spring Cleaning,” it’s not too late – you may suddenly feel motivated and energized enough to get things straightened out. So while you’re days are sunny and fresh, why not brighten up your career?

Our team of career experts have put together this checklist of “Things to Do” to heat up your work-life for the summer:

Clean up your workspace

How do you expect to do your best work when your workspace is messy? Several studies have linked clutter to decreased productivity—and happiness. Not everyone is affected by a messy desk, but, for many, piles of papers, sticky notes, personal items and wires and cords in disarray can leave them feeling overwhelmed.

Whether you work from home or in a more traditional office, take some time to clean and organize! Dust your workspace, throw out trash or anything you no longer need and organize your work tools. You should have one major goal in mind—to make things easier on yourself. Think about your typical day. What do you do and on what schedule? Your workspace should reflect that—and should make it easy for you to do your best work, stress-free.

After you clean up your physical workspace, don’t forget to take a look at your computer and phone, too. Cleaning out old files you don’t need anymore and ensuring that you have the newest software updates will make your devices faster and more efficient.

Prune Your Resume

Just like a an overgrown garden at the end of Spring, your resume needs pruning occasionally. Read over it (or better yet, have someone else take a look) and decide what needs to be cut and what needs to be added (if anything). Unless you have a very long or varied career, you should limit it to one page.

Update LinkedIn

LinkedIn is all too often the most neglected of the social media platforms. LinkedIn is actually pretty important—especially if you’re job hunting. Take this time to make sure yours is up-to-date. While you’re at it, go ahead and update all your public social media accounts and trim your social media connections. Having too many connections can be overwhelming and can cause you to lose sight of the point of social media—networking.

Update work and interview clothes

Think about your wardrobe and what it says about you. Maybe when you started your position, you chose your apparel with consideration, but perhaps you’ve gotten a little too comfortable since then? Maybe you’ve been wearing the same six outfits on rotation for the past two years? You don’t have to be the most stylish person in the room, but the way you present yourself does matter. Make sure your work wardrobe is made up of pieces that are professional, versatile and up-to-date. It’s been said time and time again,  but it’s true—dress for the job you want.

Take stock of where you are professionally—and where you want to be

You may love your job, but it’s always a good idea to think about what’s next. Are you happy where you are? Where do you want to be in the next six months? And are you on a path that will lead to that goal?

What’s working for you in your career? What is your least favorite part? Think about what you would change if you could–and nine times out of ten, you can! Just thinking about this will get things rolling. The next step is to write down your goals and how you plan to achieve them—including a timeline.
